The Synod is the successor of the Mages' Guild, inheriting most of their property in Cyrodiil, and operating out of their old properties in many of the Counties in Cyrodiil.

Foundation[edit]

After the Oblivion Crisis, magic and magic users were blamed as the cause by many. Institutions such as the Mages' Guild, which were once held in esteem by many in the Empire, were now looked upon with fear and suspicion. It was in the wake of this that the Mages' Guild was disbanded. In its place, many of its former members went on to form the Synod, the new sanctioned practitioner of magic in the Empire.

Organization[edit]

Unlike the Mages' Guild, which acted as sort of a college, teaching magic to its students, the Synod acts far more like a regulatory agency. They act to enforce bans against not only necromancy, but conjuration magic in general.

Also unlike the Mages' Guild, which was ruled by a single mage, the Synod is run by a Grand Council, made up of many powers mages who vote on the actions of the Synod.

Criticism[edit]

Their new goal was well received by many. Some accused the Synod of merely being a political tool, using magic to gain political power rather than to enhance their own understanding. Others accuse them of hoarding magical power to themselves out of greed.

Their bans against necromancy and conjuration magic have also put them at odds with the College of Whispers.
